As you can probably tell, I am addicted to antiques, relics, treasures from the past. My take...is that they are not too precious (or really, not precious at all). Those that are time-worn, broken, stained, torn, and damaged are my favorites. In particular is my recent obsession with taxidermy (whithin limits, I say)...and includes Jean Luc Trudeau - a handsome Canadian Goose and Lucy's new boy-toy - which I received for my "21st"' birthday last week!
I was thrilled when my friend Alicia, who was privy to the "gift" shared a recent New York Times article with me...complete with photographs, blog referrals and juicy details. (Thank you, Alicia!!)
Their friend, Ryan Matthew, collects taxidermy dogs and cats...wow! (And my daughter thought I was just kidding about the future fate of her
nearly 15-year-old kitty).
Lest we digress, this is not about dead animals at all. It is about antique apothecary jars, old medical cabinets, victorian drawings, and other vintage items scavenged from yesterday and covetted today. Run, don't walk, directly to eBay and begin your shopping extravaganza.
FYI...I just saw a full-size taxidermy lion on eBay.co.uk. You'll have to go to England to get it, though. Did I mention the £4,100 asking price? Happy Hunting!
I have suited up and gone on a hunt through Zillow in search of the perfect White Elephant ... or as my friend Laurie Meseroll likes to refer to it as ... THE MONEY PIT! For your fixer-upper-fetish enjoyment...here is just a small sampling of the fixers in my "look into" box...
Choose your favorite (some have pools, acreage, barns) or go onto Zillow and find your own dream home. Just search by price and size (ie: under $100k and more than 4,000 sf) across the country!
Went a little crazy...a storm in my brain (again). So much to do and so much I want to do! My computer isn't fast enough (and needing sleep should be outlawed)!
There are now no rules. Mix-and-Match to your hearts content. The new Whimsy Initials can have any two images, initials, quotes...you decide!
Guess What! Glitter Initials are back! Antiqued script initials covered in clear German Glass Glitter. Dangerous to me (LOL) ... but sandwiched between glass just for you! Also making a comeback is a new take on the vintage black metal letters in all their rusty glory. Of course, let's not forget about the classic antique Anagram game pieces.
Best of all...there are now quotes (which I love) and nearly 100 images to choose from.
Pair them up any way you want! Just $18 each (and orders include one Free 24" nickel-plated chain and Free First Class Shipping).
A Saturday morning quickie turned into a 3-hour ooh-and-aah fest! Tickled pink, was I, to visit again the Land of Tarte! The latest issue of Somerset Studio showcased the barn of all barns (those slipcovered wing chairs shown in the magazine are now in my living room...and that makes me happy...like blueberry pancakes - as Enzo would say!).
The rule of thumb is to walk around the barn once, twice, thrice, and more. Each time, passing something old, something new, something scavenged, and something to take home.
The vintage burlap-covered ottoman (below) was screaming my name (Brad said it wasn't). His new rule...one thing in, three things out. Whatever happened to even-steven?
However, these three vintage paper wedding balls made it home with me (and NOTHING went out). Although, they folded up for transport and were hidden under the back seat LOL! But he did agree to a very old low-rider black dresser which was at Annie-Fannies tag-sale below the barn...$20! That's just 2-1/2 Strawberry Drops! A tough choice, but I went for it.
Look at the pale blue baby shoes? The doll torso's (see Erika...more DOLL ART)! And, how lovely can a square of grass get? THIS LOVELY!
All this grandeur tucked inside a big 'ol barn! If only the cows and chickens knew!
So, if you asked me, Sally...do you love the Queen of Tarte and Tarte-land? I would say....
Vintage girdle art - framed - as only the Queen of Tarte could do! Be sure to visit her blog for the calendar of Land-of-Tarte events including the August 22nd Tarte Monthly Event with special guest Linda & Ludmil of Willow Nest! Not to be missed!
Yes...as part of the great "Burger-Off" that Cheryl started (bless her heart LOL)! First it was me...at In-n-Out in California. Yes, I admit, I was an In-n-Out virgin. I've heard the raves. The faves. But trust me...it was no Burgerville burger! (By the way...the photo of me eating the In-n-Out Burger on Chery's blog is deceiving...that whole tray of burgers and fries was not for me...it was for Cheryl! LOL!).
So, in the spirit of the great Burger-Off, Cheryl indulged in a Burgerville Burger. Here is the result:
Yes...yes...yes...I think she likes it! Hey, Mikey! Burger, Fries (with Tarter Sauce for dipping - delish), and Onion Rings (sold individually for $1.39 each cuz they are so darn yummy)!
So Burgerville, which you can only find in the Northwest (as they post on billboards near the last Restaurant for 24,000-ish miles), is my fave.
Cheryl is still favoring In-n-Out (personally, I think it's the hype - ha!).
Next stop...Five Guys and Fries (which Bonnie loves). At this rate, I'll be a size 2 in about 427 years!
Virgins...Virgins...Everywhere! And Love-Birds, too!
By special request (thank you for your emails) I am adding two early fall dates for Workshops in my Studio. Tucked between taking my daughter to college back east in August...and my son in the west in September...and before the craziness of Holiday begins...I am offering two Soldering for Virgins Workshops and one Love-Bird Necklace. Perfect timing for learning the techniques just in time for Holiday Gift Giving! The next Workshop opportunity is Las Vegas 2010 which is filled.
Workshops are in my studio - as seen in the Where Women Create Premier issue (Winter 2009).
I hope you can join me! It is always fun to meet Lucy & Stinky (and maybe....Lucy will have a new "boyfriend" soon - hint hint)!
Workshops fill up fast and space is limited...so be sure to register soon.
And a bonus...theStreet of Dreams Portland 2009 will be held from August 1-30 in the Pearl District. If you are in town for my SOLDERING FOR VIRGINS Workshop this weekend...make sure to see these multi-million dollar condos decorated to the nines! The first time the Street of Dreams has come into the city from the suburbs! Ooh La La!
